The benefits of fasting, both spiritually and physically, are enormous. Besides helping to detox the body and give the digestive system a well deserved rest, it also helps to regulate insulin levels, boost the brain chemicals and give a sluggish metabolism a kick in the right direction.
Here in Dubai we also deal with extremely hot weather conditions in the summer and can make fasting a challenge and more draining than normal, especially during the first weeks.
Since our bodies get slightly dehydrated during Ramadan (doctors say this actually helps in cell longevity, which means looking younger and living longer!) and even more so in the heat, it’s crucial to add some nourishing foods and drinks that can help to rehydrate the body after breaking the fast.
Here’s a really yummy recipe that I enjoy during the summer. It’s all natural, unbelievably refreshing and very easy to make at home for the whole family. Thanks to the watermelon and coconut water, it has a slightly sweet taste so kids love it too
2 Cups watermelon cut into cubes
1 Cup of Coconut Water (fresh or prepackaged)
2-3 Leaves of fresh mint
Place all your ingredients into the blender until smooth. Serve in glasses with a straw (it adds a special touch) and enjoy! This should make 1-2 servings.
All of these ingredients are known for their hydrating properties and returning lost electrolytes into the body. And they just happen to be some of my favorite fruits and vegetables. Let me know how you like it…
Sahtain… Ramadan Kareem to you and your families!
