Keep it Natural: Clean Your Makeup Brushes

The beauty industry has become way more sophisticated over the last few years and almost every lady I know (from teens to grandmothers) have a set of makeup brushes these days. Gone are those simple days of foundation, “rouge” (that’s what my grandma called blush) and some lipstick. Us gals now contour, sculpt, highlight and blend…all which require a nice set of makeup brushes, and the more the better ofcourse:)

With makeup and brushes, inevitably come unnecessary bacteria.  If not cleaned properly, they quickly become a unsanitary breeding ground for unhealthy bacterias that we glamorously transfer from our blush palettes to our face and back again….ewww.

It’s very important to keep your brushes clean in order to avoid breakouts, skin irritations, rashes and even watery eyes!  I have found a natural way to keep my brushes clean and sanitized in just a few minutes time.  There are plenty of “makeup brush cleaners” on the market but please be aware most of them of lots of harsh chemicals and preservatives that you do not want on your face, period.

Here is my all natural makeup brush cleaner recipe that you can make on the spot each time you clean (ideally 1-2 times a week) or you can double up the recipe to keep it on standby for whenever you need it:

Ingredients

1/2 Cup Natural Apple Cider Vinegar

2 Tsp Natural Liquid Soap

1 Tsp Almond Oil (or Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, etc)

1 Cup warm filtered water

Method

Mix together the ingredients in a glass jar in the same order as mentioned above.  Shake well and place 1/4 cup of the mixture in a bowl so that you can soak the hair of the brushes for 5-10 minutes.  Have another bowl of clean water on hand so that you can rinse and squeeze out the brushes then rub the bristles around on a towel (maybe an old one that you don’t mind if it gets stained) until the brush no longer has makeup coming out on the towel.

Make sure to place the hair of the brushes neatly back in place before laying flat to dry.

And that’s all there is to it! Clean, bacteria free makeup brushes in under 5 minutes.

No more excuses ladies…clean your beauty utensils, all natural is the way to go!
