Why Laughter is the Best Medicine

Have you ever heard the saying that laughter is the best medicine? Well it seems that the medical community have confirmed that our ancestors were right.  A good laugh everyday has a plenitude of positive effects on both the body and mind.  I believe that everyone enjoys a good laugh, I know I do (comedies are always my first pick when choosing a movie to watch at the movie theater).  Since I’ve my had my three wonderful children, they make it really easy to laugh… a lot.

To enjoy the benefits that laughter has to offer, you need 10-15 minutes of a deep, heartfelt belly laugh each day- the kind that makes you abs hurt! Make sure to watch my youtube video for a good chuckle and find out the technique to triggering this laughter yourself.

Here are some of the benefits of having a good laugh:

  • It’s the Best Antidote to Stress

Laughter is so powerful that it seems to actually ‘shut down’ the stress hormones such as cortisol. Also it triggers the ‘feel-good’ chemicals and hormones, endorphins and dopamine, that help in pain relief, relaxation and have calming effects that seem to melt all your worries away.  This means you can say ‘bye bye’ to depression, bad moods and even aging!

Laughing also builds the body’s immune system so you will be healthier and less prone to disease and disorder.

  • Super Human Brain Wave Activity

Laughter induces Gamma frequencies in the brain, the type of brain wave seen in experienced meditators. These gamma waves improve the “synchronization” of your neuronal activity, which bolsters recall and memory. This brain wave is also associated with self healing and a deep spiritual connection with yourself and the universe around you.

  • Laughter is Compounded by Numbers

You’re 30 times more likely to laugh around other people than when you are by yourself so go find some friends that have a good sense of humor!  It’s important to surround yourself with positive, loving people (you are the company you keep) and join a laughter yoga class for even more fun.

Tip: Make it a morning ritual to wake up and have a laughter session with your family. It promotes bonding plus you will all feel outstanding and have a perfect start to your day.

HAHAHoHoHAHAHa….oooh, that was funny!
