I have a secret potion to protect me and my family from colds and infections- I have been using it for over two years now and it really works! I consulted with a well known Ayurvedic Doctor here in Dubai and he swore by a honey spice concoction that Indians have been using for centuries- it will build one’s immunity, build strength and maintain good health. What is this mix that could be so potent and effective? I’ll give you this ancient recipe at the end of post
Honey has plenty of uses and along with that- benefits beyond belief. Honey has been a staple in our house every since I can remember. Through my research and personal experience, I consider honey to be my ‘liquid gold’ and I incorporate this into our meals, drinks, home remedies, beauty treatments and more! Some cultures even use honey to treat minor wounds and skin disorders.
Here are a few ways honey can be used to benefit you and family:
- Builds Immunity
Research has shown that 1-2 teaspoons of raw honey can boost one’s immunity through protecting the body against harmful bacterias and its anti-inflammatory effects can even keep allergies at bay. Its composition is roughly 80 percent carbohydrates, 18 percent water, and two percent vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
- Cough Suppressant
As soon as one of my children starts to have a cough, I immediately cut out diaries (dairy tends to stimulate mucus production) and give them extra of my special recipe, also honey mixed with herbal teas and even homemade lemonade (water, lemon, honey and some grated ginger).
In the same way, honey is great to sooth sore throats and it speeds up the healing process. Boiled fresh ginger tea with lots of honey and lemon is almost an instant fix.
- Natural Energy Drink
Need a boost of energy to get you going before your workout or during those low-energy afternoon hours? Honey is a perfect way to get you going as it is an unprocessed natural sugar (fructose and glucose) and goes straight into the blood stream once ingested. I also find it’s a great way to get your energy levels back on track after being in the hot sun, either after a day at the beach or just being in and out of heat during the hot summer months.
Are your children having exams and need extra focus and concentration? Give them honey!
- Beauty Treatment
I recently started incorporating honey into my homemade facial masks. It is a perfect for eliminating those bacteria causing breakouts on the skin. It is also an excellent way to add moisture to the face and body as it treats dryness. I’ve heard that it helps with dandruff and scalp conditions as well!
Anyone looking to shed a few pounds? Drink honey mixed with some warm water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. It is said to boost your metabolism to stimulate weight release.
** ‘Liquid Gold’ Health Potion **
(as advised by Dr. Chandy George at Balance Wellness Center, Dubai)
1 teaspoon high quality raw honey
1 pinch of cinnamon
1 pinch of tumeric
Mix the honey and spices in a spoon and place directly on the tongue. Take this daily and your body will grow stronger and be less effected by those seasonal colds that make their rounds each season. This is great for you and your children!
P.S. Western medicine advises that honey be given to children aged 1 year and older.
