Thanks to my modelling days in my late teens, I was exposed to the beauty and fashion industries in a big way. I had the first peek into all the biggest brands and latest launches in town. I quickly learned from the top professionals in the business what it meant to have a good skin care routine (plus I learned how to apply makeup like a pro). Since then I have bought and used all kinds of branded and non branded skin care products, all with various results.
Interestingly enough, some of the biggest names in the industry told me to avoid makeup when I wasn’t working because it will “clog up your skin”. Although I didn’t really get it then, many years later I realized that they meant all the chemicals, perfumes, dyes, preservatives (i.e. toxins) that is in makeup, and even skin care products, that doesn’t need to be anywhere near your face or body!
My journey into a more natural beauty approach has led me to some incredible natural brands and simple items that you already have at home that are probably the best I’ve ever used for my face and body. In this post I will tell you about some every items that work wonders for the skin. Next week, I will tell you all about the natural/organic beauty brands that I use.
- Rose Water
I was introduced to rose water as a beauty product when I had some threading done at a salon close by my home. Once done with the hair removal, the beauty technician applied rose water on a cotton pad to the area that had been threaded. I was amazed how fast the redness disappeared in minutes (normally it would take an hour) and it left my skin feeling soft and smelling magical! After having my children, my skin has become sensitive and requires special attention than it did before all the baby days. After many trial and errors with facial products that left my skin irritated and under nourished, I decided to buy a bottle of rose water and use it my toner. Since then, I consider it a beauty staple and wouldn’t go a day without using it!
- Baking Soda
I discovered that baking soda was a great way to clean and whiten the teeth many years ago. I stopped using those packaged whitening treatments once I found out they can be very abrasive, make your teeth sensitive and of course made with all kinds of chemicals that I didn’t want in my mouth. I use baking soda once a week to brighten my teeth and remove any build up. Just place some on your toothbrush instead of toothpaste and there you go! Brighter, whiter teeth in minutes.
I also recently started using this as a facial scrub after being dissatisfied with so many face scrubs that I have bought lately. I must say I am impressed with the results. Just after one gentle scrubbing session, my breakout areas looked less red and irritated, skin softer and glowing. I do this twice a week at a maximum for the best results. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with some rose water to make a paste and gently scrub all areas of the face and neck for 2-3 minutes.
- Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a staple in our house. We use it in our cooking, for salads, in my baby’s homemade formula, as a body moisturizer, for body scrubs and face masks, hair treatment, make up remover, and the list goes on.
Specifically in my beauty routine, I use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup and as a hair treatment whenever it feels dry. The eyes are one of the most delicate and sensitive areas on the body and coconut oil is something natural and chemical free you can use that will easily remove makeup, plus it keeps your eye area hydrated and wrinkle free!
As a hair treatment, rub some through the ends of your hair at night before you sleep then wake up in the morning and wash as normal. Be sure to place a towel on your pillow so the oil doesn’t get all over your bedding.
Wow, you are radiating already!
