With our hectic lifestyles that seem to get busier by the day, more people are feeling “stressed out” and physically unwell as result. Whether related to work life, personal matters, or financial concerns, it is absolutely necessary to make use of de-stressing techniques that work for you. Discovering ways to unwind and re-balance your energy and thoughts is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Here are some pointers that work for me. They are simple, easy and will help you to reconnect with yourself to move forward with focus, clarity and peace of mind. Taking a few minutes out of your busy schedule each day to spend some time with yourself is more rewarding than you can ever imagine.
1. Laugh out Loud
Having a good laugh is one of the best ways to de-stress as it immediately relaxes your body, triggers endorphin release (happy chemicals) and shifts your perspective on the situation. Watch a funny video or participate in a laughter yoga class.. or better yet just start to laugh spontaneously and eventually it will transform into a genuine heart felt chuckle!
2. Breathe it Out
This is a big one as most of us are not breathing properly in the first place! Breathing oxygenates our bodies (without which we cannot live) and releases toxins from the body. Take 3 long, slow, deep breaths with your eyes closed (in through your month and out through your nose), you should feel an immediate shift in your mental and physical state. You may continue for more rounds if necessary.
3. Write it Down
Expressing your thoughts and emotions is therapeutic. Instead of keeping it all inside, write anything and everything that comes to your mind down on a piece of paper. This is a private exchange between you and the paper and it isn’t important to keep it- just rip it up and throw it away once you feel that you are done.
4. Exercise and Move
Go for a brisk walk, a workout at the gym or do some yoga. Moving the body stimulates brain chemicals that make you feel happier, more relaxed and it’s a proven way to blow off some steam.
5. Change the Environment
If you find yourself in a stressful moment, you may become emotionally out of control and experience uncomfortable physical symptoms. Find a way to change the environment for a minutes, whether it means stepping outside or excusing yourself to go to the ladies or men’s room. This way you can collect yourself (breathe, meditate, laugh, etc) and go back to the situation with a new perspective.
6. Meditate for a While
Meditation is an excellent way to clear the mind and it has a never ending list of benefits for the body and the brain. Credible scientific research has shown that people who meditate regularly are more relaxed, healthier and happier than their non-meditating counterparts. (How to Meditate post coming soon!)
7. Spend Time with a Loved One (or a pet!)
Love has the power to dissolve any stress or negative emotion. Spend some time with someone you love to melt away your anxieties and trigger feelings of comfort, security and connectedness. Even thinking of your loved ones can create a similar effect!
